The headline shift: AI is no longer a side project for innovation teams — it sits on the critical path for network availability, energy efficiency and customer experience.

1. Autonomous networks and closed-loop automation

The TM Forum's Autonomous Networks Level 4 milestone is now a board-level KPI at multiple carriers. Closed-loop automation — detect, decide, act, learn — is being deployed for fault remediation, traffic steering and energy savings. Vodafone CZ, Telefónica and Deutsche Telekom have all published 2026 progress reports showing double-digit reductions in mean-time-to-repair after rolling out self-healing core automation.

2. AI-assisted RAN and 5G optimisation

Open RAN deployments are creating a software-defined surface where machine learning controllers (rApps and xApps) can tune cell parameters, beamforming and handover thresholds in near real time. The result: 8–15% capacity gains on existing spectrum without new sites, and material reductions in radio power consumption during low-load hours.

3. Predictive maintenance for physical infrastructure

Telecom automation now extends well beyond the digital network. Computer-vision models inspect tower assets from drone imagery, vibration sensors flag failing rectifiers before outages, and weather-aware models reroute traffic ahead of storms. Operators report fewer truck rolls and longer asset lifetimes — both directly visible in quarterly OPEX.

4. Edge AI and Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC)

With 5G standalone networks maturing, operators are monetising MEC by hosting AI inference at the network edge for enterprise customers: manufacturing quality control, retail computer vision, connected-vehicle perception and immersive media. Sub‑10ms round-trip times make latency-bound workloads viable on public networks for the first time.

5. 6G research and AI-native air interfaces

6G is still in the research phase, but the design principle is already clear: AI is not bolted on — it is native to the air interface. Universities and vendors are publishing prototypes where neural networks replace fixed signal-processing blocks, adapting to spectrum conditions in ways closed-form algorithms cannot. Expect early standards work to crystallise through 2027–2028.

What this means for operators

The carriers winning in 2026 are not the ones with the largest models. They are the ones with the cleanest data pipelines, the strongest MLOps practice, and the clearest mandate to let automation act on the live network.
